From Nov 12 to 13, Sinopec presented its high-quality green development approach at the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) in Baku, Azerbaijan. At the Yabuli Annual Conference on Sustainable Development held at China Pavilion during COP29, Dr. MA Yongsheng, Chairman of Sinopec and Member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, shared the company's strides in high-quality, environmentally friendly development under the Belt & Road framework for the global audience. At a side event titled Hydrogen Powering Climate Action: Towards a Clean Energy Future with Net-Zero Emissions held at the China Pavilion of COP29, Dr. MA shared the company’s practices in building China’s No.1 hydrogen company and promoting green and low carbon transition.
Sinopec has been actively collaborating on green energy and low-carbon tech projects under the Belt & Road framework. In Saudi Arabia, Yanbu Aramco Sinopec Refining Co., Ltd. (YASREF), the JV between Sinopec and Aramco, has become a model of China-Saudi energy cooperation. Meanwhile, Sinopec Tech Middle East LLC. has been well established in Saudi Arabia, and carried out technological collaborations with numerous prestigious universities in Europe and Southeast Asia, achieving phased results. In Ecuador, Sinopec applies green production technologies to shape a strong, environmentally friendly brand. In Uganda, Sinopec utilizes ultra-quiet and zero-emission drilling machines to minimize environmental impact on wildlife. In Saudi Arabia, Sinopec has planted approximately 15,000 trees.
Sinopec has been actively involved in emerging industries such as hydrogen, solar and wind power, accelerated the transition towards green and low-carbon energy, focused its efforts on the green hydrogen refining and hydrogen transportation businesses, to build China’s No.1 hydrogen company. Sinopec has gradually established a hydrogen industrial chain covering production, storage, transportation, utilization and research, striving to achieve carbon perking and neutrality goals powered by hydrogen. Sinopec is devoted to enhancing green hydrogen production capacity and exploring the path of emission reduction in the refining and chemical industry. Sinopec has been improving its infrastructure layout to promote green and low-carbon transformation of transportation, and accelerating the pace of scientific and technological innovation to break the bottleneck of hydrogen energy commercialization.
Dr. MA emphasized the importance of collective action in building a robust hydrogen industry ecosystem and transitioning towards an "hydrogen era" in the energy sector. And he stressed the need for enhanced international cooperation, openness & innovation as well as trade facilitation across hydrogen industry value chain. He called for deepening the practical cooperation in green energy, green refining, green technology and green ecology, to achieve carbon peaking and neutrality goals and address climate change.
